OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder) and the Panic Attacks

Anxiety takes many forms and one of the most common is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). OCD is sometimes looked at as a less than serious form of anxiety. This is because people assume that it is merely quirky behavior and not worth worrying about. However, OCD is definitely a serious condition and those that may suffer from it should definitely take is serious. This is even truer when OCD is combined with the onset of a panic attack.

Are wondering exact what OCD is? To simply state it, OCD is basically intrusive and reoccurring thoughts. So that the person can get relief from these thoughts, they are compelled to do several rituals to get their mind off their thoughts. What are the forms of these so-called rituals? The manifestations of the forms of these rituals are unlimited. It could be anything like excessively exercising, reading, or possibly cleaning. But these can become a serious issue because of the influence they have. What influence you ask? Basically, these rituals start taking over most of a person’s existence. This can hamper the person’s ability to function in the workplace or in social situations.

Just think about it, if the person feels compelled to do 3 hours daily of cleaning, reading or exercising, that person would have little time for other activities such as work and friends even. The result of this is that the person needs to seek out methods for dealing with this disorder.

Because OCD has irrational qualities to it, it is often experienced with panic attacks also. The person can have a panic attack, if they aren’t able to do their ritual when they need to. When the ritual needs to be performed to chase away the intrusive thinking patterns, a panic attack could ensue if the ritual is not performed.

Trying to deal with even a single anxiety disorder would be complex by itself. But having to handle two disorders at the same time would be worse. But the good news is that methods are out there to handle the situation. Usually, when the OCD problems are brought under control, the panic attacks lessen too. In addition, the person doesn’t always need some kind of drug treatment to handle the situation.

A very successful treatment for OCD is the behavioral modification therapy. This therapy is successful through lessening the reactions individuals have to the different triggers, and this is what brings on panic attacks to occur and also the rituals to be done. These happen because of the connection to the anxiety disorder.

These programs have long since been proven to be effective. So, anyone that suffers directly from these problems can rest assured that treatment is available and the ability to reduce the impact of the condition may be possible. Of course, success will hinge of the type of treatment in relation to the severity of the condition. As such, each individual case must be treated differently.

Both OCD and panic attacks are most definitely serious conditions. Luckily, there is successful treatment available for them. So if you are suffering today, with these conditions, be comforted in the knowledge that the right treatment can be found to give you relief.
