Studies have shown up to 75% success rate when using pelvic floor strengthening exercises to treat incontinence. The kegel exercise is the cornerstone of pelvic floor strengthening but it is often not taught appropriately. Most are taught to squeeze their pelvic floor muscles as if to stop the flow of urine or the passing of gas. But there is also a second, and very important step, that requires you to draw your pelvic floor up into your pelvic outlet as if their is a string attached from your belly button down to your pelvic floor and you are attempting to pull it up. Holding this elevation for an eight count will work the endurance fibers of your pelvic floor muscles. Learning this from a physical therapist as well as learning optimal posture to support your pelvic floor and additional strengthening exercises for the supporting muscles of your abdomen and pelvic girdle will set you on the right path to recovery-Tasha Mulligan MPT, ATC, CSCS
